Your gold questions, answered
About karats, making charges and what to know before buying.
What is the difference between 24K, 22K, 21K, 18K, 14K and 9K gold?
Karat indicates the proportion of pure gold in a piece out of 24 parts:
- 24K: approximately 99.9% pure gold.
- 22K: approximately 91.6% gold.
- 21K: 87.5% gold.
- 18K: 75% gold.
- 14K: approximately 58.5% gold.
- 9K: 37.5% gold.
The remainder consists of other metals added to change the hardness, colour and properties of the piece. Generally, a higher karat means more pure gold, while lower karats are usually harder and more durable.
Does a higher karat mean a better piece?
Not necessarily. A higher karat means a greater proportion of gold, but it does not make a piece the best choice for every use. Some people prefer higher karats for their gold content, while lower karats may suit those looking for greater hardness and durability for everyday wear.
Is 14K gold stronger than 21K gold?
Yes. In terms of hardness and resistance to scratches and bending, 14K gold is usually more durable than 21K because it contains a larger proportion of other metals. In comparison, 21K contains more gold.
When reselling gold, which may lose a larger share of the purchase price: 21K or 14K?
In many cases, 14K may lose a larger percentage of its original purchase price, particularly when making charges are high. At resale, a piece is mainly valued according to its weight, karat and the gold price at the time. Making charges paid when buying are usually not recovered in full.
For this reason, 21K often retains a greater proportion of its material value relative to the price paid.
What are gold making charges?
Making charges cover the cost of turning raw gold into a ring, bracelet, necklace or other piece. They include labour, design, manufacturing methods and finishing, and are added to the value of the gold itself.
Why do making charges vary between pieces?
Making charges vary according to the design, precision of the work, manufacturing method and level of detail. Two pieces can therefore have different making charges even if their weight and karat are similar.
What should I check before buying gold?
Check the karat, weight, hallmark, making charges, and the quality of the workmanship and finish. It is also preferable to buy from a trusted jeweller and obtain a clear invoice that records the details of the piece.
Does an imported design mean higher quality?
No. An imported design or piece is not automatically higher quality. Quality depends more on the gold karat, manufacturing methods, precision of the finish, durability and quality of the workmanship.
Which is better for investment: gold coins, bars or jewellery?
If the main aim is to retain the value of gold, bars and gold coins generally involve simpler making charges than jewellery.
Jewellery combines the value of gold with wear and adornment, but it may carry higher making charges that affect the difference between the purchase and resale prices.
